I can’t thank you enough for visiting my website and helping my publishing dreams become a reality. Below are some frequently asked questions about me. Feel free to reach out if you would like to learn more about my books, my work, or my life.
Where do you live? Where are you from?
I grew up in a small town in the South and then moved to Seattle for law school. After 8 years in the Pacific Northwest, I moved to Boulder and then Denver. I also spent a year living in New York City. I currently live in Denver with my 9 year old daughter, while my 18 year old daughter pursues her dreams in NYC. My former spouse (and coparent) lives close by. We have a great relationship and consider ourselves family for life. Our two dogs go back and forth with our youngest daughter.
What inspired you to write?
I am a lifelong reader and writer. From an early age, I visited the high school library because I outgrew the elementary libraries. I devoured fantasy and horror, such as R.L. Stine and V.C. Andrews. I would also sneak my mom’s Harlequin Romances and read them under the covers with a flashlight. It’s no wonder that these two interests (romance and fantasy) are what I read and write these days!
What is your favorite part of writing?
I love everything about it! There is nothing better than creating worlds and characters and outcomes. My daughters often joke that my main character (Ophelia) is my favorite daughter.
Where do you get your ideas from?
Everywhere and anywhere. Driving down the street. Attending yoga. Prior bosses who are like villains. Taking sailing lessons. Spending a day with my daughters. Road trips. Random bars. My brain is always moving. I call it it the circus in my head. There is always a show going on and a book idea that is being explored.
Do you outline your stories or write as you go?
I’m what’s called a pantser. I come up with the general concept and just start writing. For the Wildes Witch Trilogy, I did jot down a very short outline of where Books 2 and 3 were going. But I started with a general idea for Book 1. The book evolved so much that it looks nothing like my original concept.
How do you handle writer’s block?
I go for a walk, research travel ideas, read a book, or switch to a short story idea I have. I think it’s always a good idea to take breaks and come back to your work if you feel stuck.
How long does it take you to write a book from start to finish?
This is hard to answer. Is a book ever done? I drafted Book 1 of The Wildes Witch Trilogy in less than 2 months. But the editing process has taken me years and multiple drafts. I drafted Book 2 relatively quickly as well, but it will not go through as much editing because I feel more confident and comfortable with my characters and their stories.
What’s your favorite book of all time?
I absolutely love Jane Eyre. I still have a copy my teacher gave me almost 30 years ago. In terms of more recent books, The Invisible Life of Adie Larue is at the top of my list. I also love the genius of Sarah J. Maas.
What hobbies do you have outside of writing?
Many of my hobbies show up in my writing. I love yoga, lifting weights, and travel. I also recently discovered sailing. Expect to see that in future books.
If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?
I don’t have a specific fictional world in mind, but I would love to live in a world with supernaturals and powers. Wait, do we already live in that world?!
What’s your favorite place to write?
Anywhere I can get a few hundred words down! The beach is always a favorite because I feel such calm around waves. But I also love writing in coffee shops and any loud spaces. Something about the noise helps me focus on the words in front of me.
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind?
I absolutely listen to music. I create playlists for my books. I’m working on making those public for my readers.
Do you write full-time or balance it with another job?
I balance writing with a full-time job (plus my hobbies, children, and family). It’s not always easy, but nothing worth it is.
